How to Get Your First 5 Bookings

The hardest bookings you will ever get are the first few, because you have no reviews, no portfolio, and no word of mouth yet. The fastest way I found through that wall was simple: do a few free events. Nobody loves working for free, but when you are starting out it is the highest-leverage thing you can do. My first three free events turned into four paid bookings.

Why free events work

You are not really working for free. You are buying a room full of exposure. Every guest at that event is a potential client or knows someone planning a party. You get to show off your booth, hand out cards, talk to people, and in the best case book their event on the spot. One free Saturday can seed months of paid work.

How to line up your first free events

Put the word out to friends, family, and your local Facebook groups. Offer a free booth for an upcoming party. Be upfront that you are just starting out and may need a little extra time to set up. People are glad to help when they know the deal, and you get real events to cut your teeth on. That is exactly how I booked my first three.

Treat the free event like a paid one

Setting up at your house is muscle memory. A venue you have never been to is a fresh puzzle every time, so give it the same care you would a paying client:

  • Scout the space first. Where is the nearest power? Where does the backdrop go? Where do the prop table and printer sit so the flow makes sense? Walk it before guests arrive.
  • Include prints. Yes, it is money out of your pocket. But a printed strip in someone's hand is a walking advertisement, and it sets you apart from booths that only hand out a digital link.
  • Deliver your absolute best. Free does not mean lazy. The quality of the experience is exactly what turns a guest into your next booking.

Be ready to capture the booking

This is the part most new operators fumble, and it is the whole point. When a guest asks "how much for my party in June," you do not want to be digging for a number. Have a way to check the date and lock it in right there, ideally with a deposit, before they leave and the excitement fades. Capturing that lead on the spot is the difference between a nice chat and a paid event. At the very least, always have business cards on you (I made mine in Canva).

Stack up reviews from day one

Set up your Google Business Profile before your first event so you can start collecting reviews immediately. Tell guests up front that you will be asking for a review after they use the booth, so it is expected. I went from zero reviews to almost twenty from my free events alone, and that social proof is what makes the next client trust you. A quick tip: put your Google review link right in the text or gallery message you send guests afterward, so leaving a review is one tap instead of a chore. That trick deserves its own guide, and we will cover it.

Timing is everything

Free events only pay off if you run them at the right moment. Do them at the start of a season, not the end. A free graduation party at the beginning of grad season puts you in front of guests who are booking their own grad parties in the next few weeks. Run that same free event at the end of the season and you have missed the window for the whole year. The same logic applies to wedding season, prom, and the holiday party rush. Do a free event in the dead of the off-season and you will be waiting months for any payoff, so plan your free events to lead into the busy stretch, not trail out of it.

The payoff

Three free events, run at the right time, with prints in hand, cards out, reviews coming in, and a way to book on the spot, turned into four paid bookings and a wall of reviews for me. That is your launchpad. Once you have a handful of paid events and real reviews behind you, referrals and local search start doing the heavy lifting, and you stop chasing bookings and start fielding them.
